- Accountant Salary After Tax
What an accountant keeps in Switzerland after tax, 2026
Few financial centres in Europe carry Switzerland's weight. Global bank headquarters, the major audit firms and hundreds of holding companies sit in Zurich and Geneva. Accounting pays well as a result, though the distance between a trainee and a qualified Wirtschaftsprüfer is enormous.
Accountant net pay level by level in Switzerland, 2026

Becoming a dipl. Wirtschaftsprüfer
At the summit of the profession sits the Dipl. Wirtschaftsprüfer, or Expert-comptable diplômé, awarded by EXPERTsuisse. Without it nobody may sign a statutory audit opinion in Switzerland. Reaching it takes four or five years after graduation, combining work in practice with a federal examination that nobody describes as gentle.
What it buys is considerable. Newly qualified at a Big Four firm, a Wirtschaftsprüfer earns CHF 120,000 to CHF 140,000, where an unqualified senior with the same years behind them takes CHF 85,000 to CHF 100,000. By manager level the distance has widened, past CHF 160,000 against CHF 120,000 for colleagues without the qualification.
Big Four, banks or industry
Swiss accounting careers follow a recognisable pattern, with Big Four as the common starting point:
- Big Four (Zurich, Geneva): Lower starting pay than banks, but qualification sponsorship, structured training, and faster progression. Exit point: years 5-8 after qualification.
- UBS / Credit Suisse (now UBS) / Julius Baer: Base salaries 20-35% above Big Four at equivalent levels. Bonus culture means total comp varies significantly. A finance controller at UBS Zurich earns CHF 140,000-190,000 base.
- Nestlé / Novartis / Roche (industrial multinationals): Competitive base pay, lower bonus, strong pension and benefits. Basel-based roles (Roche, Novartis) often pay slightly less than Zurich finance roles.
- Private equity and family offices: Highest total comp for senior finance professionals, concentrated in Zurich and Zug. CHF 200,000-400,000+ for qualified CFO-level professionals.

Questions readers ask
How much does an accountant earn in Switzerland after tax?
A qualified Swiss accountant, the dipl. Wirtschaftsprüfer, on CHF 130,000 a year keeps roughly CHF 7,800 a month in Zurich. A senior auditor without the full qualification on CHF 100,000 gross keeps roughly CHF 6,050 a month. At CFO level, beyond CHF 250,000, take-home passes CHF 13,000 a month even after the steep progressive rates.
Is the Swiss Wirtschaftsprüfer qualification recognised internationally?
The dipl. Wirtschaftsprüfer is recognised in Switzerland and has bilateral recognition arrangements with some EU countries, but it is not the same as ACCA, CPA or CA. Foreign-qualified accountants holding ACCA, ACA or CPA who work in Switzerland normally need to demonstrate equivalent competence, and to sign Swiss statutory audit opinions they must either hold the Swiss qualification or work under the supervision of a qualifying Wirtschaftsprüfer. Many international firms in Switzerland accept ACCA or ACA alongside Swiss credentials for non-audit roles.
