Common questions on Germany take-home pay

Start with a gross of โ‚ฌ55,000 in 2026. The Nettolohn, the amount that actually reaches your account, comes to roughly โ‚ฌ34,300 a year, about โ‚ฌ2,860 a month. Lohnsteuer accounts for around โ‚ฌ9,100 of the shortfall, and the other โ‚ฌ11,600 or so is social insurance covering health, pension, unemployment and long-term care.

At this income level social insurance is the bigger of the two, absorbing something like 21% of gross by itself. It is not entirely lost from a tax perspective, since those contributions reduce the base the Lohnsteuer is worked out on.

There are no flat brackets in Germany. A formula lifts the rate continuously as income rises, which works out to roughly these effective bands:
0% up to โ‚ฌ11,784, the Grundfreibetrag
roughly 14 to 24% between โ‚ฌ11,785 and โ‚ฌ22,000
roughly 24 to 42% between โ‚ฌ22,001 and โ‚ฌ66,760
42% from โ‚ฌ66,761 to โ‚ฌ277,825
45% above โ‚ฌ277,825, known as the Reichensteuersatz

The employee share for 2026 looks like this:
Pension, Rentenversicherung: 9.3% on earnings up to โ‚ฌ90,600
Health, Krankenversicherung: 8.75% up to โ‚ฌ66,150, at the average statutory rate
Unemployment, Arbeitslosenversicherung: 1.3% up to โ‚ฌ90,600
Long-term care, Pflegeversicherung: 1.7%, rising to 2.2% for people with no children, up to โ‚ฌ66,150

Every German employee belongs to one of six tax classes, and the class governs how much is withheld month by month rather than what you finally owe:
Class I: single, widowed or divorced
Class III: married, the higher earner
Class IV: married, both on similar pay
Class V: married, the lower earner
Everything here assumes Steuerklasse I. Married couples using the splitting method, Ehegattensplitting, frequently pay noticeably less between them.

For most people, no. The Solidaritรคtszuschlag was scaled back heavily in 2021 and now catches only the top 3.5% or so of earners, meaning an income tax bill above roughly โ‚ฌ18,130 a year, which normally implies a gross above about โ‚ฌ67,000. Where it does apply it is charged at 5.5% of the income tax due, not of the salary.

Soli is only added at the income levels where it is genuinely owed.
