A gross of €60,000 for 2026 nets roughly €38,400 a year, about €3,200 a month. Box 1 bundles income tax and the national insurance premiums into one calculation, and at this level the pair account for around €21,600 of deductions.

Dutch employment income runs on only two Box 1 rates, which makes the arithmetic far simpler than in most of Europe.

There are two:
36.97% on income up to €75,518
49.5% on anything above €75,518

The lower rate carries more than it appears to. About 27.65 of those 36.97 points are national insurance premiums funding the AOW state pension, ANW survivor cover and WLZ long-term care. Reaching state pension age removes the AOW element, which pulls the lower band down to roughly 19.03%.

Two of them matter to most employees in 2026:
Arbeidskorting, the labour credit: up to €5,532, withdrawn above €38,098
Algemene heffingskorting, the general credit: up to €3,068 below roughly €24,813, tapering away by about €75,518

Across the €35,000 to €70,000 range these two drag the effective rate well below what the headline 36.97% suggests.

The 30%-regeling allows qualifying employees recruited from abroad to receive up to 30% of salary free of tax for five years, dropping to 27% from year four under the 2024 changes. It targets people brought in for expertise that is hard to find locally.

The numbers on this page use standard rates, so anyone holding the ruling keeps substantially more than shown.

Not the way most countries handle it. The volksverzekeringen premiums are baked into the Box 1 rate itself, so that 36.97% already contains roughly 27.65 points of social premium. They are settled through the income tax return rather than appearing as a separate payroll line.
