Common questions on Singapore take-home pay

On a gross of S$80,000 for YA 2026 the cash landing in your account is around S$67,300 a year, about S$5,608 a month. Income tax at this level is only about S$3,350, while employee CPF takes a much larger S$9,600, being 20% of wages up to the monthly ceiling.

The distinction is important: CPF is not spent, it is moved. It goes into your own accounts for retirement, housing and healthcare rather than to the government.

The scale rises in small steps:
0% on chargeable income up to S$20,000
2% from S$20,001 to S$30,000
3.5% from S$30,001 to S$40,000
7% from S$40,001 to S$80,000
11.5% from S$80,001 to S$120,000
15% from S$120,001 to S$160,000
18% from S$160,001 to S$200,000
19% from S$200,001 to S$240,000
19.5% from S$240,001 to S$280,000
20% from S$280,001 to S$320,000
22% above S$320,000

It does not, and the point is worth making plainly: CPF is compulsory saving and the money stays yours. Employees under 55 put in 20% of monthly wages, subject to the S$6,800 ordinary wage ceiling, with the employer adding a further 17% on top of salary.

It divides three ways: the Ordinary Account for housing and education, the Special Account for retirement, and MediSave for healthcare.

Several, and together they matter:
Earned Income Relief: S$1,000 under 55, S$6,000 from 55 to 59, S$8,000 at 60 and over
CPF Relief: mandatory employee contributions are deductible
NSman Relief: S$1,500 to S$3,000 for national servicemen
Parent or Grandparent Relief: S$5,500 to S$14,000 per dependant

Only Earned Income Relief is applied here by default.

For higher earners it is among the most efficient places in the developed world. The effective income tax rate on S$120,000 sits somewhere around 8% to 9%, against roughly 28% on an equivalent ยฃ70,000 in the UK.

An honest comparison has to allow for the 20% going into CPF, but because that is saving rather than expenditure, cash take-home in Singapore still finishes well ahead of western Europe and about level with the US before state tax.
