A surcharge applied to the income tax figure rather than to salary: 7% of the tax owed for most people, climbing to 9% beyond certain income thresholds. It pays into the Fonds pour l'emploi.

It is a financial centre with the highest nominal GDP per head in Europe, and it leans heavily on its neighbours. Roughly 45% of the workforce are frontaliers commuting in from France, Belgium and Germany.

Pay generally runs 30% to 50% above what the same role earns over the border, tax is competitive and English is standard across the financial sector. Housing is the catch: rents and prices in Luxembourg City are brutal even by western European standards, which is exactly why so many people commute instead of moving.
