Common questions on Japan take-home pay

A gross of ¥7,000,000 for 2026 leaves take-home of roughly ¥5,250,000 a year, about ¥437,400 a month. National income tax takes around ¥310,000, inhabitant tax about ¥375,000, and social insurance covering health, pension and employment roughly ¥1,065,000.

Both the employment income deduction and the social premiums are removed before tax is calculated, which shrinks the taxable base considerably.

Applied to taxable income once deductions have been made:
5% up to ¥1,950,000
10% from ¥1,950,001 to ¥3,300,000
20% from ¥3,300,001 to ¥6,950,000
23% from ¥6,950,001 to ¥9,000,000
33% from ¥9,000,001 to ¥18,000,000
40% from ¥18,000,001 to ¥40,000,000
45% above ¥40,000,000

A reconstruction surtax of 2.1% is then levied on the income tax itself.

Jūminzei is charged jointly by the prefecture and the municipality: a flat 10% of taxable income, split 4% prefectural and 6% municipal, alongside a per-capita levy of ¥5,000 to ¥5,500 a year.

It lags a year behind, so today's bill rests on last year's income. On ¥7,000,000 that is roughly ¥430,000 a year, and it catches a great many people out in their second year of work.

The employee side for 2026:
Kosei nenkin, employee pension: 9.15% on standard remuneration up to ¥650,000 a month
Kenkō hoken, health insurance: around 4.9%, varying by insurer
Koyō hoken, employment insurance: 0.6%
Combined: roughly 14.65% of standard monthly remuneration

Kyūyo shotoku kōjo is a standing deduction from gross salary applied before taxable income is worked out, and it is unusually generous:
Up to ¥1,625,000 gross: ¥550,000
Up to ¥1.8m: 40%, with ¥550,000 as the floor
Up to ¥3.6m: 30% plus ¥180,000
Up to ¥6.6m: 20% plus ¥540,000
Up to ¥8.5m: 10% plus ¥1,200,000
Above ¥8.5m: a flat ¥1,950,000

It is the single largest reason Japanese effective rates come in so far under the headline brackets.
