Common questions on Ireland take-home pay
A gross of โฌ55,000 in 2026 leaves roughly โฌ38,800 a year, about โฌ3,233 a month. PAYE income tax takes around โฌ11,700, USC โฌ2,600 and PRSI โฌ2,255.
Together that is an effective rate near 29.4%, once all three deductions are counted rather than income tax on its own.
There are only two rates, which is unusual:
20% on income up to โฌ44,000, the standard rate band for a single person
40% on everything beyond it
Credits are then set against the tax itself. The Personal Tax Credit of โฌ1,875 and the Employee Tax Credit of โฌ1,875 come to โฌ3,750 between them, which effectively wipes out the tax on the first โฌ18,750 or so of income.
The Universal Social Charge has its own scale for 2026:
0.5% up to โฌ12,012
2% from โฌ12,013 to โฌ25,760
4% from โฌ25,761 to โฌ70,044
8% above โฌ70,044
Nobody earning under โฌ13,000 in a year pays any USC.
Pay Related Social Insurance is Ireland's social contribution. The great majority of employees fall into Class A and pay 4.1% on earnings above โฌ352 a week, which comes to โฌ18,304 over the year.
It pays for the State Pension, jobseeker's benefit and illness benefit.
At comparable salaries the totals land close together, but they are put together differently. Ireland levies USC, which Britain has no equivalent of, so there is an additional layer in the sum.
Working the other way, the Irish standard rate band of โฌ44,000 is proportionally wider than the UK's ยฃ50,270 for many earners, keeping more income at 20% instead of pushing it into the 40% band. The country comparison further down this page puts the two next to each other.
